Besides designing clothing, New Zealand trio (Gosling, Moore and Harwood) from Stolen Girlfriends Club are also known for their short films and photographic exhibitions. Their last short film The Fate which was a tribute to Helmut Newton is brilliantly shot and scored.
To coincide with their 2009/2010 collection, they have created a short film named after the new range Weapons of Mass Seduction. The short film directed by photographer Derek Henderson, is all about "friends, family and awkward moments". Fragments of interviews that Derek has shot, stars hand picked models, actresses, socialites, musicians, friends and family. It's very New Zealand.
Also check out their advert that they did for BMW's Mini Cooper a few years back.
These days, I seem to have more free time then I've ever had since being in Tokyo. Having a simple and stress-free job has resulted in more time to do my own shit. Also, I've manage to turn my financial misfortunes into a positive. A reduced desire for alcohol has been good for the body and I seem to be thinking more clearly. Admittedly, I do regret not having seen some friends, so apologies to those that I've flaked on and haven't seen (or talked) to in a while. Sacrifices have to be made when you are dead broke. To past my time I've been going hard at the gym, playing tennis, drawing, and shitloads of reading. Am half way through re-reading all my design magazines as well as Haruki Murakami's Underground. This book is about interviews with people who were affected by the 1995 Tokyo subway Sarin attack. And, to be honest, I was hoping for a more interesting read. So far, I've been reading a repetition of testimonials on Sarin symptoms, the twelfth time in a row is no longer riveting. I'm only a third of way into the book so here is hoping that it gets better.
Graphic design legend Neville Brody is exhibiting new and recent works at the Ginza Graphic Gallery in Tokyo. The exhibition (nb@ggg) will showcase commercial work for clients such as men’s fashion title Arena Homme+ with commissioned or self-initiated exploratory projects such as The Freedom Space (commissioned by the London Design Museum 2009), or 4ofclubs (commissioned by Shelter London 2009) and Far Fields (2010), a new series of experimental painterly digital posters by Brody. nb@ggg will also reflect on 20 years of FUSE and innovative typography, an area in which Brody has been a leading light for over 30 years. It's free admission so go check it out.
So it's been a while since I checked out the Tsubi / Ksubi website and after seeing some of the photos from their Sydney’s RAFW Fashion Week show, i was curious to see what the world of high-end skinny jeans was up to.
was searching for new music tonight and found this in my bookmarks. Go to the ALBUMS and you can listen to all the artists. I found this a couple of years ago when I was searching for Gonzale's, Solo Piano. This album is special because it is unlike any of his other releases; he happens to be a rapper. There are no lyrics and no additional instruments in Solo Piano. Also check out the other artists. The site is well designed and makes for good listening especially on a chilled out Sunday.
continuing their awesome beats and lyrics... The Roots have just released their first single Dear God 2.0 from their new album ... look out for it in stores.
Been busy up until now, so apologies. I've recently changed jobs, which means more time to catch up on reading and updating myself on what is going on in the world. A kind of self re-education. Books that I've been reading goes along the lines of - art theories, Thai tattoos, The Yakuza, design books, and various English literature. It's been refreshing to stimulate my brain matter again. This week I watched this video on Italian Bicycle Frame Builder Giovanni Pelizzol. The short film, called Anima D'Acciaio (Soul of Steel), documents Ciocc's expertise as he makes a new fixed gear frame by hand, sharing his insights into the craft and his life along the way. This was shown as part of the Bicycle Film Festival last year. It's beautifully shot and narrated.
